Refining Your Oil Intake
As well as not eating gluten, dairy and refined sugar, just to make things a little more difficult for myself, I also don’t consume certain oils. These are oils that are high in polyunsaturated fat, for example, the cheaper vegetable oils made from seeds (canola, sunflower, corn, safflower, grapeseed, rice bran and soybean). From what I’ve read and researched, I personally believe there are very convincing reasons not to consume these oils, but I think it’s important that people make up their own minds on the matter. Nonetheless, I thought I would share some of the articles I’ve come across - you can find the links at the bottom of this post.
I’d like to encourage you to give them a read and to do some research on the oils that you’re consuming. I am convinced enough to refrain from consuming these oils as much as I can help it. I do realise that certain knowledge may prompt the desire for quite a significant shift in the way one eats; considering how much bought fried food is purchased and consumed.
So this may not be a comfortable realisation if you’re used to eating out often or enjoy the convenience of store bought food. But, as Michael Pollan points out in his TV series ‘Cooked’, the restaurants, cafés, and even petrol stations feeding you are businesses. So, many of them are feeding you at the lowest cost possible, and these seed oils are by far the cheapest option.
Whether or not our food is being spOILed (sorry, again) by polyunsaturated fats, it doesn’t hurt to know exactly what, and how much oil you’re consuming. I mean, no one is arguing that eating copious amounts of oil or deep fried food is good for you, right?
But the good news is you can still eat the foods you’ve grown to love, and I want to help you do that! I’ve added a recipe to my website for chicken nuggets, chips and tomato sauce; because we all know everybody loves chicken nuggets and chips, amiright? It does require some effort on your part, but it’s worth it. By going back to the kitchen and making food from scratch, you know exactly what you’re putting in your body, which is a very positive thing, really!
